Summer 2020 BBQ Tips

Summer BBQs may look a little different this year, but a few extra feet of space between chairs shouldn't stop you from gathering in small groups and having a good time.  As such, my summer BBQ tips will also look different this year.  Here is my 2020 social distancing BBQ guide:

1. Pre-wrap silverware with a napkin for each guest the day before gathering.

2. Cook proteins that can easily be picked up with a fork (ie. chicken sausage, burger, veggie burger).  The chef should never touch the cooked protein, but transfer to a plate or patty directly.

3. Be extra mindful of others.  If you touch it, keep it.

4. Condiments should be distributed by 1 person.

5. Think simple. Kebabs are great options because the cook can empty the skewer onto a plate without touching the food.

6. Roasted veggies are best done on a foil baking pan.  That way everyone can use their fork to gather the veggies.

7. Keep sweets fresh and light.  Strawberries and whipped cream or an assortment of fresh cut fruit is nice.

8. As always, the person handling the food should have very clean hands and be wearing a mask.

9. Depending on the time of day, plan to have a protein packed breakfast and snack accordingly.  Going hours without eating will lead to overeating later in the day.

10. Smart sipping.  RosΓ© ALL DAY can lead to headaches, spikes in blood sugar, and mindless eating. Hydrate between drinks and never drink alcohol on an empty stomach.

Make sure to watch out for one another this weekend.  If you feel unsafe, don't hesitate to verbalize the amount of social distance you need to feel comfortable.  Keep the sanitizer handy, protect yourself and others by wearing a mask when you can't keep your distance (house or bathroom), but also have fun.  It's not going to be a normal summer for anyone, but some safe interaction is good for our mental health.

Stay safe and happy 4th of July.
